Every parent wants to ensure their child is in the best health. The moment your little one is born, their health becomes more important to you than your own. It’s natural, when our children depend upon us, that we want to do everything we can to keep them healthy. Even so, no amount of worrying can stop illness from striking. The best thing you can do is set a plan in place. Knowing how to act is the only real thing you can do to help. If you can’t bear to think about it, we’ve got a plan that will serve you well should anything happen.
TRY NOT TO PANIC
The first point to note is that you should try not to panic. It may be easier said than done, but it’s important. The efficiency with which you handle the situation will have an impact on how severe it gets. You’re going to need to keep your head about you to get your child the best care. Your first reaction may be to fly into a blind panic, but it’s important you resist the urge. Think about what you need to do, and make sure you do it.
GET THEM TO A DOCTOR
The first thing you need to do is get them to a doctor. Bear in mind that illness strikes at any time. Prepare for getting them to a physician in the middle of the night if necessary. You should write down the number for your pediatricians and keep it to hand. That way, you won’t waste crucial time trying to find it should anything happen. Bear in mind that visits during the night will cost above the odds. It may be worth having a fund set aside for just such eventualities so that you don’t struggle to pay the bill! Before you meet with the doctor, talk to your child about their symptoms. The sooner a diagnosis is made, the sooner treatment can begin.
GET MEDICINE DOWN THEM
Children can be stubborn when it comes to medicine. Even if they’re critically ill, it may be a struggle to get them to take the stuff. Help the doctor and your child by developing methods to get them to take medicine as soon as possible. Practice when they have a minor ailment. That way, you’ll know you can get them to take medicine if anything serious happens. Get creative with your ideas. Disguising medicine in sweet drinks, or jams, can be an excellent idea. The sweetness will hide any horrible taste, and your child should be able to eat it!
REMEMBER TO LOOK AFTER YOURSELF
If your child is admitted to a hospital, it’s important you look after yourself. Even if the situation is serious, you don’t want your child to know it. Keep yourself washed and smiling. Seeing you looking dishevelled and exhausted will cause them panic. Not to mention that you won’t be in the best position to cope with what’s ahead if you aren’t sleeping enough!
