We all have those days where we stare at our closet and just think, urgh! You stare at your overflowing mess of clothes and shoes, wondering how you accumulated so much stuff and how it is possible that none of it is wearable. Well, we have scoured the Internet to find the best tips, tricks and wardrobe hacks to help you create a closet that is neat and pretty once more, and a wardrobe that has a little more room for you to put new stuff in. Woohoo. New stuff.
Total Overhaul
Okay, you’re going to want to dedicate at least a whole day for this first step, maybe even a long weekend, because your first step should be a total overhaul. What we mean by that is taking out absolutely every single thing out. Everything. No Exceptions. Then you can begin to get your clean on, which needs to happen, just admit it.
Question Everything
The hardest part about creating space for new things is being strict about which of your old clothes you should keep. You need to get weeding. Whether you like it or not, you need to get weeding. To help you, though, there are a few questions you can ask yourself to determine what stays and what goes:
Does it fit?
Was it worn in the last year?
Would you buy it now?
Do you LOVE it?
Hanger Goals
One of the most effective ways to make space in your closet is to get rid of the old chunky hangers you have been using and replace them with slimmer hangers. This will help you make the best use of the space available. The other thing you can do to better understand what stuff you have is to use clothing organisers. That way you can separate your clothes into categories: seasons, functions, type, whatever you fancy.
Consider Repurposing
We all hate our closet at some point each month. But instead of frowning in disdain, start thinking about how you can repurpose. Your baggy white tee and mom jeans may seem a bit nothing, but it could become a killer outfit when you have some 14k gold chains to choose from or some gorgeous heels, or a stunning watch, anything that to make it a statement. It could be a quick dip-dye that does the job or making a lace hemline. Sometimes just adding something new with something old will freshen up your look. Just try to rethink the clothing piece one more time before buying new things.
Fashion Fund
Right, it’s time to look at your reject pile and think about what you can do with it. A lot of the time, you can sell the clothes that you don’t want anymore. It was once a matter of only being able to put them up on eBay, but there are now loads of online vintage stores, like Vinted, or you can sell them to local vintage stores in your area or online yardsales. So, if it doesn’t fit, isn’t your style, is lightly worn or was expensive then we suggest you sell it and start building up a new clothes fund. Everything else you can try and give away to friends before giving away to charity. Simple.
