As a parent, the chances are that your children come first, and that’s a good thing because that’s how it should be. However, while it’s important to put your children first, that doesn’t mean that you should always put your happiness and needs on the back burner.
Take home design, for instance. As parents, we tend to make sure that our children’s bedrooms are beautifully designed and decorated, but we neglect our own room, allowing it to get into a state where we no longer enjoy spending time in there.
It’s important to remember that just because your kids should come first, that doesn’t mean you should neglect your own needs. With that in mind, below is a guide to doing up your bedroom, along with advice for what you should save on and what you should splurge on! (Most of us moms are on a budget, so finding ways to save is important.)
Start with the walls
The first area to focus on should be the walls. If you like the color of your room, it could just be a case of washing the walls, and that’s it. However, if you dislike the color or the paint or wallpaper is peeling or bubbling, you will need to repaint or apply new wallpaper. The good news is, however, that it’s easy to save on the cost of painting or wallpapering, it’s just a case of being smart about where you get your supplies from and going down the DIY route with the task. For buying supplies, look out for discount home stores, both local ones and online stores as you can get some incredible deals.
Consider changing the flooring
Once you’ve sorted the walls, the next step is to think about the flooring. As you’re a mom and have little ones running about, the truth is that carpet is not the answer. Instead, hard flooring is a better bet. This is because carpet gets easily too quickly, whereas hard flooring – wood, laminate, lino, or slate, is much easier to keep clean. If you’ve already got hard flooring, save and keep it. If you currently have carpet, it’s probably best to splurge and replace it with hard flooring, as this will ensure that your room stays looking nice in the long-term. (There’s nothing worse than grimy carpet to take down the look of a room!)
Treat yourself to a new bed
Every room needs a focal point, in the bedroom, it should always be the bed. So if your bed is far from striking, then perhaps it would be a good idea to replace it. The good news is that you can get a beautiful bed frame for a budget price, if you’re savvy about where you shop, that is. However, your mattress it is probably a good idea to splurge on. One option to keep costs low is to look at a brand of beds, such as Ikea beds, that can come with a mattress thrown in, as that way you’re getting a lovely new bed frame and a new mattress. Whatever mattress you opt for, make sure that it’s comfortable and offers the right level of support for yours’ and your partner’s backs.
Use accessories to add style
To add touches of style to your room, accessories are crucial. Take into account the color scheme and style of the room and use that to pick out accessories that are ideal for adding to your bedroom. Ideally, you want to select items that add visual beauty to the space and make it somewhere that’s more appealing to spend time in. Think faux fur rugs, cute bedding, pretty curtains, stylish ornaments, and throws and throw pillows that are interesting and stylish. The great thing about accessories is that they’re affordable, so you can easily save on them.
So there you have it, a guide to updating your bedroom, along with tips and suggestions for when it’s best to save and when it’s best to splurge.
