DIY Double Mountain Book Ends (From Wood Scraps)

Making your own mountain bookends out of old scraps of wood couldn’t be easier and cheaper! And Im going to show you how to do it!

I love a good book end and finding lots of ways to display and organize my favorite books but book ends can get expensive. And with a tight budget and four kids there’s no way I can splurge on book ends so I did what I always do and looked into what it was going to take to make my own and found out its really quite simple.

The best part about making your own mountain bookends is that you get to customize them to your space and style. I made some peach ombre double mountain book ends for my art studio and some stained dark wood ones for my husbands office, then my kids make some stained wood mountains for their rooms as well. These make great group crafts as well, perfect for boys scouts, girls camp or ladies craft night. You could easily cut these out yourself and make ahead a bunch of book end craft kits for your friends, then have them sand them, glue them and paint them for the craft night.

So here is how you get started!!!

Supplies:

• 2×6 wood cut at 8 inches long
• 2×4 wood cut at 6 inches long
• wood stain or sating craft paint
• white stain or satin craft paint
• Satin Polyurethane spray can

Tools:

• Sandpaper
• Circular saw, ban saw or jig saw
• medium paint brush
• rags for wood stain

1. Cuts: Cut your 2×6 scrap of wood at eight inches and your 1×4 scrap of wood at six inches. Then cut both rectangle pieces of wood diagonally across to create your mountain triangles.
2. Sand Down your pieces of wood so there are no sharp edges or points. Dust off and remaining sawdust.
3. Assemble: With your blocks upright and in a mountain arranged position you can simple hot glue the wood pieces together. Hot glue them while they are up right sitting on a flat surface to help your book ends be level.
4. Stain or Paint: To stain your wood I recommend using a rag instead of a brush, it absorbs better and doesn’t leave as many streaks. If you are painting your wood you can just use a nice quality craft paint, I recommend using gloss or satin. Flat craft paint is hard to dust and keep clean.
5. Snow Caps: Wait for stain or paint to dry. Then add your snow caps with white craft paint. You may need to use up to three coats if your wood is dark or your white paint is too thin.
6. To protect your bookends longer spray paint them with satin polyurethane. Let dry and cure over night then your book ends are ready to use. (This is optional)

Tips:

I just used hot glue to glue my triangles together. I really like gorilla glue, they make a hot glue stick as well and its fantastic.

Give your mountains a couple of days to really dry and cure so they don’t stick to your books. A few coats of polyurethane or waxy coating helps with that as well.

If you buy your wood at a hardware store you most likely can have your wood cut there as well so there is no need to buy a ban saw

Save your scraps of wood for future wood craft projects they come in very handy
