String art made easy, simple and quick with a fun summer twist! I’ve designed 16 different summer themed templates for you to choose from all available for free print and download! Instructions:
Craft Time: 20 to 45 minutes
Tools:
- Hammer
- Scissors
- Sand Paper
- Chop Saw (optional)
- Tweezers
Supplies:
- Mini String Art Template
- 2×6 Wood cut to a square (cut 5.5 inch length)
- 1 inch paneling Nails
- Embroidery Floss (One of these is enough for about two blocks)
Tip: If you don’t have a chop saw to cut your wood you can go to the Home Depot and have them cut your 2×6 board to the 5.5 inch lengths for the wood squares for FREE! You will have to sand the edges down though yourself.
1. Cut and Sand your 5.5 x 5.5 scared wood pieces. Stan your wood per the instructions on your stain can. Let dry over night.
Tip If you are making this craft for a large group prep the wood ahead of time by cutting them and staining them first. Its always great to have a few stain and color options for your crafters to choose from. I am loving the white wash wood because the colors pop. The dark stain looks really good if you are using light embroidery floss, and the lighter backgrounds looks better if you use the medium and dark embroidery floss colors.
2. Cut out the template design you like the most. Place template on the board where you want it and hammer in two or three nails to hold the template in place. You will want to nail in 1/3 of the nail down into the board so that it is secure but also so you have room to wrap the string around the nails. Hammer in the nails by working your way from the inside to the out using the nail dot indications on your template.
3. String Time: Tie one end of the embroidery floss to an outward nail. You will want to tie it multiple times to secure the string, you don’t want it coming loose later on. Wrap the string around the nail one or twice and then string along the floss to the next nail and wrap it around tightly. Continue this until all the inside nails and design is strung the way you would like it. Wait to string the boarder edges of the design till last so the string will sit on the edges nice and bold. Tie off securely.
Tip: Paneling nails come in several different colors like silver, black and white. You can use different nail colors to add interest to your design. You can also color the nail heads different colors with permanent marker to give it that extra pizzazz.
String Wall Art Banners:
Take your string art to the next level with wall art plaques, they are so simple to make, about the same price and can be very versatile. Just cut your boards at seven inches long, with one side cut straight and the other end cut at a 30 degree angle on both edges. Drill two holes on the top corners for the string to run through. Sand the rough edges, stain, dry overnight and then add the string art.
Summer Vibes Wood Banner:
For my summer vibes wall art banner I used a “summer” word art template I found in the Cricut online store and cut it out at a 5 inch wide size on my Cricut Explore Air machine. Then glued on the “Summer” paper word art embellishment with a glue stick. You can also use letter stickers from a craft store to add the “summer” part of your banner.

I designed this line of simple string art designs because other string art crafts looked too hard, the kits were too expensive and I didn’t like the designs that were out there. I wanted something fresh, fun and something I thought just about anyone would enjoy. These make the perfect little projects to do while chatting with your friends and family or even listen to an audiobook or your favorite podcast.
